Air Force Assistance Fund Drive starts Feb 1st!
Friday, February 05, 2016

The 2016 AFAF campaign will run from 1 Feb through 29 April 2016. Bases will once again choose between 3 different groups to run their campaign. Group 1’s campaign will run 1 Feb – 11 Mar, Group 2 starts 29 Feb – 8 Apr, and Group 3 begins 21 Mar – 29 Apr. AFAS will offer funds for bases to host kick-off or other events. Bases with active duty populations of 1000 or greater are authorized UP TO $500 while bases with active duty populations less than 1000 may spend UP TO $250.

Funds for the kick-off should primarily be used to purchase the food for the kick-off. Some bases choose to have kick-off breakfasts at the club on base or a pancake breakfast at the A&FRC or other base location. Others choose to host a barbeque, chili cook-offs or 5 k fun runs or color runs. Checks are to be written to the vendors for the events. Air Force Aid Society representatives use the AFAF Event tab in EAGLE to process the check(s). Checks should not be written to the Installation Project Officer (IPO) for the entire amount beforehand. Since amounts authorized are UP TO $500 or UP TO $250, checks are written as needed and may be less than the total amount authorized. If an IPO gets pre-authorization for their AFAF Kick-off event and choose to use a personal credit card for the purchases, a check can be cut to the IPO (not to exceed the amount authorized, once receipts are provided).

Occasionally we are asked if funds can be used to purchase prizes or gift cards for an event. No more than 1/4 of the total funds allocated should be used for prizes (no more than $125 or $60, depending on total amount authorized). It is permissible to use kick-off funds to purchase signage and thermometers to put at the front gate to show your base’s progress. Funds may also be used to host a bowl-a-thon or other athletic event. If funds are left over after the initial kick-off, we encourage IPOs to publicize a challenge among the units that the one with the highest participation rate will be given a pizza or sub party at the conclusion of the campaign (this is only if funds are left over). Sometimes a base will spend $350 or $400 on their kick-off and have $100 leftover. If they publicize a competition between the units, then at the conclusion of the campaign, another check may be written to purchase pizzas, etc. Kick-off funds cannot be used as cash incentive prizes or to jump start your campaign. In other words, an AFAS check should not be written to AFAF to help achieve your goal.

We encourage you to be creative and think outside the box for hosting AFAF kick-off or other fundraising events. Some bases in the past have purchased Krispy Kreme doughnuts to use for their kick-off. Others have held basketball and volleyball games between units or between enlisted vs officers. Whatever you choose to do, plan your event in advance, arrange guest speakers for each of the four affiliates and be passionate about telling the story for each charity…especially how the Air Force Aid Society helps our members through emergency assistance, education programs and community programs!
E-mails will be coming your way in the coming weeks and throughout the campaign with more news about the 2016 campaign. We would appreciate you sending us pictures of your AFAF events so that we may spotlight you on facebook and other social media forums. Photos may be e-mailed to

Alert! Questionable "Baby Bundles" Website
Friday, July 25, 2014

The following is extracted from a June 25, 2014 "CID E-Alert"

Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID), Fort Meade, MD has received information concerning an apparently recently developed Internet Website - "Baby Bundles" ( which appears to be geared specifically to military personnel and their family members.

A cursury review of the website by CID identified several aspects of concern of the information being solicited to potential users.  In the website's "Assistance" link on the home page, it was noted in order to obtain "Emergency Assistance" which the site defines as "Emergency Disaster, baby born weeks early, etc.", the website requries an applicant to submit a current copy of the Servicemember's Leave and Earning Statement and current DD Form 214.

Pending further inquiry by appropriate agencies, the ownership and actual intent of this website should be considered questionable, based on the type of confidential and personally identifiable information (PII) being solicted for their services.

Wounded Warrior Assistance
Friday, April 11, 2014

Air Force Aid Society Headquarters caseworker Scott Hald was inspired to reach out to retired SSgt Daniel Meyer after reading an article featuring him in the Washington Post.  SSgt Meyer suffered debilitating injuries as a result of his service in Iraq and Afghanistan and is largely confined to his home.  He has discovered a love of playing golf on a simulator and Scott believed we could help him finish raising the money to have one installed in his home.  Scott contacted SSgt Meyer and was able to coordinate with Foresight Sports to finish paying for the simulator and installation.  The Air Force Aid Society is honored to be able to contribute to this project on behalf of SSgt Meyer.  Following are links to the Washington Post article and Daniel Meyer’s blog.

Help for AF WIC recipients
Thursday, October 10, 2013

We have become aware that the government shutdown has affected WIC funding in some states. The unavailability of WIC vouchers in those locations may impact Airmen who depend on this vital program for  their children’s nutritional needs.  AFAS is here to help AF families who may be impacted by this and also stands ready to help Airmen with their basic living expenses if they experience pay problems as a result of  the shutdown.

Thursday, September 26, 2013

The Society will undertake our most extensive renovation since moving into our Crystal City space over twenty (20) years ago.  Starting on 30 September our key customer service centers will be essentially working from home.  Here is what will not change: our email capability (and addresses), access to our case work system (EAGLE & EAGLE-i), and our telephone numbers/service should continue without disruption.  However, we will be using our virtual desks, so you will have to leave a message and we will call you back.  Make sure your message contains sufficient information to contact you - - commercial telephone numbers, alternate numbers and email addresses will be appreciated!  The following contact information is how we will conduct business during the renovation:

Emergency Assistance:  Call their central line (703) 607-3060 and leave your message.  A caseworker will call you back.   You may also send e-mails to .  For emergency assistance outside the HQ AFAS normal business hours, continue to use the after-hours phone number of (571) 314-3628.
